FAQ

What is a hackathon?

A hackathon is a full-time event over the course of several days where participants with different backgrounds team up and create solutions to real-life challenges. They use different methods, technology, campaigns, and mentoring. The weekend results in prototypes, fresh new concepts, and innovative usage of technology.

What is an online/virtual hackathon?

In a virtual hackathon all participants are remotely connected. Irrespective of their location, everybody can participate in the hackathon and help to build great new products and services. To enable the interaction we will provide a Slack channel for communication, screen sharing tools, and a digital whiteboard.

Who can participate?

We welcome people of all job descriptions, whether you're a designer, developer, marketer, entrepreneur, project manager and so on. Diverse groups mostly work incredibly well together to produce the best results.

What if I sign-up alone or don't have a team?

Don't worry if you don't know anyone attending. Teams will be formed before the hackathon and during hackathon. We do extensive team building and help you to find the perfect team with great team members.

Judging Criteria

  • What to expect
You are going to get feedback during the demo from a dedicated jury. The goal is to asses the status of your solution you created during the Hackathon, project the future collaboration with your challenge champion and celebrate what you have achieved.
  • Degree of innovation
Degree of innovation and creativity of the solution and the intended approach or technology with which the solution is implemented. Are there existing or similar solutions? How do they differ from this one? What is unique about your solution?
  • Scalability
Scalability of the solution. What is the expected demand? How many people are affected and benefit from the solution? How many can use it or are willing to pay for it.
  • Progress
Progress made during the Hackathon. The rule of thumb is: well-documented results that can be built upon are better than as much code as possible. What have you achieved in the last 5 days? Where are you going to take the project from there?
  • Comprehensibility
Comprehensibility of the project and which challenge is to be solved with the solution idea and how, including the group of people who are affected and would benefit. How well is the solution communicated and documented?
